Supermarket swipe as thieves snatch hundreds of pounds worth of meat

Around £500 worth of meat was swiped from refrigerated areas in Tesco, the Co-op and Marks and Spencer stores in Bishopbriggs and Milngavie.

The thefts took place between Wednesday, October 7 and Sunday, October 11 at various times between 12pm and 6pm.

Police have arrested a man in connection with one of the thefts. The 35-year-old has been charged with stealing £140 worth of meat from Marks and Spencers at Strathkelvin Retail Park in Bishopbriggs at 3.30pm on Sunday, October 11.

Officers said they were looking for a number of people in connection with the other thefts.

A police spokesman at Kirkintilloch said: “Thieves have been filling their pockets and bags, and making off with them from the stores.

“This type of theft has been a problem for some time but there has been a particular spate over the past week.

“Stores are now taking extra precautions, security tagging meat and improving their CCTV.”

He appealed to people who are approached by anyone offering them cheap meat for sale to contact police immediately on 101.
