Superstore could create 300 jobs

PLANS by a leading supermarket chain to open up shop in Cumbernauld could create more than 300 jobs.

Morrisons is hoping to open its first store in the town adjacent to Broadwood Stadium at Westfield.

The move would create around 330 jobs with Morrisons looking to recruit from the long-term unemployed in the area,

The company will be hosting two public exhibitions to allow local people to view the proposed plans, speak to Morrisons officials and deliver their own feedback which could have an impact on how the planning process proceeds. The exhibitions are taking place on Tuesday, September 18 ,from noon to 8pm and the following day from 11am to 6pm in Broadwood stadium’s Broadwood Suite.

Morrisons say if the development receives the full planning permission required, they will work with North Lanarkshire Council and agencies such as the Job Centre Plus to recruit staff locally.

Richard Bakes, Morrisons development executive, said: “Morrisons is dedicated to growth in Scotland and our ambitious plans for Westfield will benefit the local area in a number of ways.

“The site will provide new, local jobs and enhanced choice for shoppers, whilst we also hope the development will act as a catalyst for further regeneration.”

He added: “I would urge all members of the public, local to the Westfield area, to take the time to attend one of our two public exhibitions at Broadwood Stadium.

“It is your chance to make a difference, with the opportunity to view the plans in more detail, discuss your thoughts with us and leave valuable feedback.”

Morrisons plans to minimise the new store’s carbon footprint with a range of energy efficient measures, whilst the store’s environmental performance will also be independently audited.
