Support for Philippines disaster appeal

Thousands have died since Typhoon Haiyan hit on November 8.

Like millions around the globe, people in East Dunbartonshire have been moved by the scenes of devastation following the storm - one of the strongest ever on land.

Senior citizens in Bishopbriggs have raised an impressive £600 for the appeal.

Quin’s Bar in the town organises a Christmas lunch each year for pensioners and they decided to collect donations.

Paul Gillion, owner of Quin’s said: “It’s a great amount to raise in one day, especially as they are pensioners.”

Meanwhile, Provost Una Walker has donated £200 from the Provost’s Fund and is encouraging others to give what they can.

She said: The images we are seeing on our television screens and the tragic stories we are hearing are heart-breaking.

“The people of East Dunbartonshire always respond well to situations like this and I expect this time to be no different.

“Our schools have a strong tradition of fundraising, teaching our young people the values of community and global citizenship.

“I know some will already be getting organised and I have been in touch with all head teachers to offer my support to their fundraising efforts.”
