Despite the wintry weather, summer is coming along nicely in Lanark in Bloom's polytunnel at Castlebank.

Tables are groaning under the weight of young plants which will be put into borders and beds around the town, and hanging baskets are starting to fill with the growth which will add colour to Lanark in time for the Beautiful Scotland judging this summer.

And Lanark in Bloom is hoping for gold this year, as Keep Scotland Beautiful celebrates 50 years of encouraging communities to brighten up their towns.

“The plants are coming on fine at the moment, even with the snow and frost that we have had,” said Lanark in Bloom’s chairman Ernest Romer.

It will be after Lanimers before the young plants go out into the flower beds, ready to bloom for the judging in the summer, and after last year’s silver gilt award the dedicated band of volunteers are hoping for gold this time.

“I am hoping to do a lot of fancy work with flowers, and keeping my fingers crossed for the weather,” said Ernest.

In the meantime, Lanark in Bloom is raising funds with a sale in the Tolbooth - baking, plants, tombola and books - on May 21 from 10am - 4pm.
