Taking steps ...

TWO Kilsyth mums have met with school and council officials in a bid to make their kids' daily journeys to Balmalloch Primary safer.

We reported last week that Catherine Struthers (41) and Karen Maley (33) had organised a petition to get something done about the state of the stairs leading to the school grounds from Neilston Walk, also known as 'The High Line'.

The 18 steps are regularly strewn with broken glass, left by young street drinkers, whilst poor drainage means water cascades down them and freezes in cold weather.

Nearly 100 parents have signed the document in support.

Catherine said: "We showed them pictures of what it often looks like on an ordinary day because they're usually diabolical, but they've been cleared recently since Jean Jones requested it.

"The outcome at the moment is we have to wait until they can find out who owns the land, they said they're not sure if it's the school's responsibility or the council's.

"Whether it comes under the school or the council, it all belongs to North Lanarkshire Council so does it really matter? Meantime we're all taking our kids to the school on a daily basis and the steps will be as bad as ever."

Councillor Jean Jones said: "I welcomed the meeting and will keep the parents updated, as will the headteacher, through the school newsletter."
