Meadowburn Primary pupil Callum Gourlay wrote and illustrated the colourful and informative book, which he passed on to site co-ordinator Scott McVittie.

Suitably impressed, Scott brought it to the attention of colleagues who decided to arrange a surprise treat for Callum at the Bishopbriggs school.

Callum, who turns nine this week, got the chance to sit behind the wheel of the Council’s newest eco-friendly recycling truck and also received a host of Mercedes goodies - including a model truck, cap, cup and holdal.

He was also given an eco book, annual and sweets.

The P5 pupil said: “I just came up with it. I love cars and trucks.

“I don’t like wasting energy. My sister wastes energy - she leaves her light on at night!”

Producing the book was a welcome focus for Callum who is coping with family bereavement with love and support from his relatives - including dad Fraser and sister Kirsty (a P3 pupil at Meadowburn) - as well as caring school staff.

Mary Reid, headteacher at Meadowburn Primary, said: “We’re so proud of Callum.

“He’s a lovely boy and very talented with ICT and creative ideas.”
