Tasty boost for shoppers as Peckham’s prepares to return to Lenzie, but residents unhappy

Peckham’s shut its shop in Queens Buildings, Lenzie, after the company went into administration in 2011.

However, it is set to return to the area after its application to change the use of its old store in Kirkintilloch Road – from a delicatessen to a cafe, deli and specialist alcohol shop – was unanimously backed by East Dunbartonshire Council’s planning board.

The green light was given despite objections from locals.

Councillor Anne Jarvis said: “Peckham’s is greatly missed and people are desperate for it to come back.”

Council leader Rhondda Geekie added: “It is missed in the area.”

The change of use application received more than 140 objections from residents.

A number of locals fear it will make existing parking problems in Lenzie worse and say there is no need for another cafe/bistro in Queens Buildings.

However, Councillor Billy Hendry, convener of the council’s planning board, said: “The board was delighted to grant planning permission for the return of this high-quality delicatessen to Lenzie.

“Not only will it offer a choice of high-quality food to local residents, it will put the area on the map and entice visitors – leading to a huge economic boost for the town.”

A spokesperson for Peckham’s said: “The intention is to reopen the store with our new format incorporating a cafe and hot food sampling, together with our deli and specialist alcohol shop.

“Lenzie was one of our first branches and we were part of the community for over 25 years so it would be wonderful to be back.”
