Former Lenzie Academy
pupil Conor MacDonald passed away in October this year at the tragically young age of 21, after a two-year
battle with lymphoma.

Twelve of his close friends, and his little cousin John, had initially hoped to collectively raise £1,500 for the Beatson Cancer Charity through a sponsored head shave.

Conor received treatment at the Beatson Cancer Care Unit in Glasgow as he
battled the disease.

But this target was raised within 24 hours – and their total now stands at an incredible £8,000 from both online and offline donations.

Most of the support came through the boys’ justgiving page which, by Monday, had collected £6,819 – with
donations still pouring in.

One of the team, Lewis
Carroll (19) told the Herald: “We decided to brave the shave in memory of Conor and raise as much money as possible for the Beatson Cancer Charity as we are grateful for the care and support they gave Conor when he was there. Conor was at school with my big brother so I knew him really well.”

He added: “Conor’s dad Jim helped with some of the head shavings, along with a family friend who is a trained hairdresser and we helped each other too.

“There was no real tragedies on the night although some looked better than
others!

“One of the boys, Hal,
originally came up with the head shaving proposition, thinking it would be a good idea and also because of
the fact that many of the
boys take a pride in their appearance.

“Conor’s family were very supportive of our fundraising efforts, knowing how much of a great cause the Beatson
Cancer charity are.

“We are all ecstatic with how much we have raised.

“Our initial target was £1500 which we raised in under 24hrs.

“Our total now is just under £8000, including the Gift Aid total which is phenomenal amount, which no one us could have predicted.”

The charity was formed in 2014 and is dedicated to supporting the West of Scotland Beatson Cancer Centre.
