Tears for young Heather

Mearns Castle pupil Heather Still died on Tuesday after being struck by a train at Whitecraigs station.

The incident happened at 2pm and officers from BTP and Police Scotland attended, alongside crews from the Scottish Ambulance Service, who were unable to save 
her.

The 13-year-old’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Specialist officers are supporting the girl’s family.

A statement issued by the family said: “We are completely devastated at the senseless loss of our beautiful and much loved daughter and sister, Heather.

“Words cannot express our pain and despair.

“We would also like to thank everyone for their kind messages and support that we have received and also request that our privacy be respected at this incredibly difficult time.”

Mearns Castle head teacher Dean Smith says the school are doing all they can to support the family.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the loss of a bright and popular pupil,” said Dean.

“This is a time of profound sadness for our school community and we are concentrating on providing support to our pupils and staff who are understandably shocked and upset.

“We ask for privacy for the family and for the school to allow us to make sense of this loss.

“Our thoughts are with Heather’s family.”

Heather was a member of Giffnock North Athletics Club, where her sister is also a decorated runner.

A spokesman said: ”All at the club are deeply shocked at the news of Heather’s tragic death.

“To lose someone so young is a tragedy, and Heather will be much missed and fondly remembered at the club.

“The committee, coaches and athletes extend their deepest sympathy and 
condolences to Heather’s family. Our thoughts are with them.”

Friends of Heather have taken to social media to express their grief.

“I still can’t believe she’s gone. Heather I love you so so much you beautiful angel”, said one classmate on Twitter.
