The 10-year-old from Bishopbriggs was taking part in the challenge with his mum, Amanda.

But on the first day of the hike, as they made their way up Conic Hill near Balmaha, Andrew sprained his ankle.

However, the brave youngster, a pupil at Woodhill Primary, was determined to carry on in a bid to raise money for repairs to his church.

Proud mum Amanda (33) said: “Andrew’s ankle was quite swollen and painful.

“We ended up stopping for a while. I took his bag and he limped on by leaning on me.

“But he made up his mind he wanted to do it. It was a big challenge, especially for Andrew.

“I don’t think I could be more proud of him.

“The tourist information people told us Andrew was the youngest person so far this year to do the West Highland Way.”

Amanda and Andrew, from Bishopbriggs, finished the walk - from Milngavie to Fort William - in six days.

They have raised more than £1,000 for Springfield Cambridge Parish Church’s Fabric Fund, to carry out building repairs.

Mum-of-three Amanda added: “The walk was always something I wanted to do and the church badly needed money for repairs.”
