Tennis ace Ronan is hoping to net a sponsorship boost

As a young man who is autistic he’s found it a liberating force that boosts his confidence, helps him make friends, and spurs him to still greater achievements.

But the gold medal-winning Lenzie Tennis Club player could do with some modest help to allow him to attend UK tournaments.

He joined the Lenzie club as part of a pilot session run in association with the council, and has since joined mainstream coaching – and plays regularly in matchplay events.

His mum Dania said: “Lenzie Tennis Club has been very helpful, and of course we’re all delighted Ronan has done so well in competitions. Now all he’s really looking for is some support for basic travel, clothing and, most of all, money for a new racquet.”

Ronan won gold at the Nottingham Learning Disability Regional Tennis Tournament in May, and at the Glasgow equivalent in August – and is the only athlete from the Glasgow area to be in a special para-athletes development programme.

This aims to help him reach his potential to compete for Britain in international events.

Ronan (17) said: “Tennis gets you out and helps to keep you fit and healthy. You can feel a sense of achievement – you can compete or play just for fun. If you want to compete and do well then take it up as early as possible – I wish I had as I would have had tennis in my life for longer.”
