The appliance of science!

Around 400 members of the organisation, from an area stretching from Lennoxtown to Kilsyth, took part in the Kelvin Scouts and Guides Discover Science and Engineering event, which gave participants a real insight into the subjects.

It was organised as part of National Science and Engineering Week, which runs from March 15 to 24.

From experiments on custard tin explosions and making foam, to insightful talks, there was something for everyone.

Funding was sought from several organisation to help run the event including North Lanarkshire Council, British Science Association, Foundation Scotland while businesses such as McNairs, Caurnie Handmade Soap and Glycologic contributed materials.

Kilsyth woman and guide leader Louise Garden organised the event with scout leader Marion Rankin and former county commissioner for Dunbartonshire Tracey Groom.

Kilsyth Academy teachers also co-ordinated the event including Francis McManus and Paul Dudman.

Louise said: “A lot of the kids had not been in a science lab before and they got to do challenges they had never done.

“They got to do things they would not normally, which made the event so worthwhile.”
