Councillor Ian McAlpine said: “We are highlighting to residents that free advice is available to all residents who need support to resolve their financial problems. Our welfare rights and money advice staff are experts in their area.”

He added: “Remember that paying for private debt management advice does not guarantee a better quality of advice. Fee-charging debt management companies have a duty to make customers aware that free advice is available but they do not always do so.

“By accessing our free advice people can be sure it is impartial. And if our team sorts out a repayment arrangement with a creditor all of the money paid will go towards paying off a debt rather than some going towards a debt management firm’s fee.

“Remember, we can give advice face-to-face, by phone or by e-mail and if you have mobility or access issues, we can visit you in your home.”
