The scene is set for summer reading

The Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge is well underway across East Renfrewshire, with hundreds of young bookworms signing up.

The programme was launched with a visit from author and illustrator Debi Gliori to Giffnock and Clarkston libraries.

This year’s theme is Mythical Maze, and the aim is to get primary-age children reading six books throughout the holidays, supported by 30 young volunteers from East Ren high schools.

Every reader who completes the challenge will be invited to a medal and certificate presentation in September.

Councillor Mary Montague, convener for community services and safety, said: “The challenge is always hugely popular in all our libraries.

“It’s a fantastic way to keep children reading over the summer and I’m sure our youngsters have their reading well under way.

“Well done too to our volunteers, who are fantastic at encouraging these young readers and helping them with their book choices.”

This year’s programme also includes a section for teenagers aged 12-17, under the theme Zombie Zone, as well as an adult challenge.
