THEIR NAMES ON SCHOOL'S DEATH WARRANT

CUMBERNAULD'S Labour councillors refused to defy the party whip during last week's crunch vote on school closures.

The opposition SNP group and independent Gordon Murray unsuccessfully called for St Francis of Assisi Primary and Cedar Road Nursery to be retained.

Councillor Bob Chadha, who, seconded by Barry McCulloch had argued the case for the schools at a Labour group meeting, defended his subsequent actions.

"I believe in democracy and that means following majority rule even when it doesn't suit me," he said.

Kilsyth councillors Jean Jones and Mark Griffin also voted.
