Thieves steal from church

COPS in Cumbernauld appealed for information this week after heartless thieves nicked several sentimental items from a church days before Christmas celebrations.

The haul taken during the robbery at Cumbernauld Parish Church in Baronhill included a Panasonic CD player, seven candles, a purple candle in a glass goblet and a silver baptism jug.

Police say the break-in happened sometime between 2.30pm on Monday, December 17, and 10am the following day.

Thieves gained entry to the church by smashing a window before they made off with the items. Police did not place a value on the items but they are keen for anyone with information to come forward.

Reverend Catriona Ogilvie, minister of Cumbernauld Parish Church, said: “We were, of course, shocked and saddened that anybody would break into the church and steal something significant like our baptism jug.

“We’re grateful to the police, who were extremely helpful on the day and have been very supportive since then, and I’d also like to say thank you to our church community, who have rallied round in so many ways.

“The church is really about the people, not the building, and they have been wonderful.”

Any witnesses are urged to contact Cumbernauld Police Office on 01236 503900.
