Third Tesco for Cumbernauld gets thumbs down from planners

A bid to bring a third Tesco to Cumbernauld would seem to have failed after it emerged that planning chiefs will not give it their blessing.

The supermarket chain wished to partially convert Condorrat Social Club in Main Road into a Tesco Express but the plan sparked 3000 objections.

These came from traders and residents alike who feared that the plan would kill off existing businesses and spark traffic chaos on this key route.

The plan will be officially aired at Motherwell Civic Centre on Wednesday, March 18 but is unlikely to pick up the support necessary for it to become a reality.

The move has already been welcomed by Condorrat Community Council, Condorrat Tenants and Residents Association and MP Gregg McClymont.

He said: “I am not anti-Tesco and like so many locals,I shop in the town’s existing stores but the new shop in Condorrat didn’t make sense given the parking and traffic situation. Plus the main street is already thriving and vibrant.’’
