Thomas, who combines his Royal Navy activities with his day job working for Transline, said: “I am of course delighted with this award but feel very humbled because other people have taken time out of their busy lives to say nice things about me by putting me forward for this award.

“It is somewhat over-whelming.”

CPO Dewar’s citation stated that he had ‘provided invaluable expertise in mine warfare while deployed on exercises with the Royal Navy and NATO and ensured a recent move for the Dalriada, the Royal Navy Reserve base in Glasgow, was completed successfully, galvanising the unit and acting as a tower of strength’.

Tom, who has also completed two operational deployments to the Gulf, thinks of the Royal Navy as an extended family and cites his time with the Minewarfare database in Taunton, Somerset, as one of his favourite jobs within the RNR.
