Time for action at crash junction

On Sunday afternoon four people had to be taken to Wishaw General Hospital after two vehicles collided at the Strathclyde Park entrance in Hamilton Road.

Firefighters were called to the scene to cut an elderly woman free from the wreckage, but the Times understands no one suffered “life-threatening” injuries.

Back in January three people had to be rushed to hospital, including a six-year-old girl, following a crash at the same junction which is controlled by traffic lights.

Now Motherwell West councillor Michael Ross is demanding action and has written to North Lanarkshire Council chief executive Paul Jukes and Chief Inspector Glen Bland, area commander for Wishaw, Motherwell and Shotts, asking what can be done about the junction.

He said: “It is only down to luck that we have not had a fatality at that junction yet.

“Ever since I was elected in 1995 there has been talk of improving this junction, perhaps with a roundabout, as part of the upgrades associated with Ravenscraig, but nothing has ever happened.

“The filter lanes don’t work as they should and I am hopeful Mr Jukes and Chief Inspector Bland can use their influence to get things moving before someone is killed.”
