SCHOOLS within East Renfrewshire can lay claim to being the best in Scotland after a stunning set of exam results.

Figures released by education Scotland show more fifth years attained five highers at St Ninian’s high school than anywhere else in Scotland,

Williamwood and Mearns Castle were in second and third place respectively.

Around 53% of S5 pupils at St Ninian’s and Williamwood achieved five highers. While Mearns Castle, St Ninian’s, Williamwood and Woodfarm all had their best ever S5 results for five highers.

Across all the schools within the local authority, 39% of pupils achieved five or more Highers with 141 S5 pupils achieving five Highers passes at grade A.

East Ren’s students in S4 also achieved their best ever results at SCQF level 5 (intermediate 2), where 70% of the year group achieved five or more qualifications at intermediate 2 level or better, up from 67% last year.

East Renfrewshire’s director of education, Mhairi Shaw said: “These results are a testimony to the phenomenal success of East Renfrewshire’s education service in never resting on our laurels.

“Hard work and dedication from our pupils, teachers, education staff and parents has resulted in the successes we are celebrating today.

“Everyone who contributes day in day out to nurture and develop the young people should be proud and we are looking towards how we can build on these successes in the future.”

Meanwhile, although Glasgow’s exam results are in joint last place alongside North Ayrshire, the number of Glasgow pupils achieving more than three highers by the end of school has risen by more than 3% since 2011.
