Tragic Gartcosh footballer remembered at packed funeral service

MOURNERS packed into a village church last week to pay their respects to a young man who died after collapsing on the pitch during a football game.

Adam Bain (30) suffered a suspected brain haemorrhage as he played for Gartcosh United on Saturday, January 12. He died in hospital the next day.

The joiner had only recently moved to a new house in Moodiesburn with his long-term girlfriend, Lisa.

Last Thursday, friends and family got the chance to say a final farewell as his coffin was led through the streets of Chryston by two pipers.

His parents, Alison and Adam, had previously said they didn’t want anybody to wear black, while mourners were asked to make a donation to the Rachel House Children’s Hospice rather than leaving floral tributes.

Abiding by their wishes, many of Adam’s teammates wore their club colours - yellow and blue - to the funeral service at Chryston Parish Church.

A poignant eulogy prepared by Adam’s mum was read out at the service.

It said: “He had the best of family, the best of friends, he had the best of life and, in Lisa, the best partner he could hope for.

“The last two years with her have been the happiest of his life.

“Family was what mattered to Adam. Born to Alison and Adam, and big brother to Andrea, he was always looking out for her.

“He always kept in touch with uncles and aunts and cousins.”

Tributes to Adam were set to continue at the weekend with Gartcosh United holding a minute silence before their game. Other amateur football teams across the West of Scotland were set to do the same.

The tragedy struck during Gartcosh’s game with Drumchapel. Many messages have been left on the club’s Facebook page.

One Drumchapel FPs supporter said: “The turnout for Adam’s funeral was fitting for a young man who touched everyone he knew.

“Listening to his sister and his friends I’m sure he would have been proud of each and every one of them.

“Our hearts are with family, friends, Gartcosh United and, of course, everyone who knew Adam.”
