Transformation plans for Kirkintilloch cause a real splash

The Kirkintilloch town centre masterplan was agreed in principle in June - giving the green light to a number of projects.

At the heart of the proposals is a £4.75million investment programme to restore the dilapidated Kirkintilloch Town Hall.

And plans have also been revealed to attract external funding to get other conservation and heritage projects off the ground.

East Dunbartonshire Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “The Kirkintilloch Canal Festival provides us with a great opportunity to showcase the town centre masterplan.

“Not only will residents be able to enjoy the full festival experience, they will be able to look at the proposals and get a feel for how well the town centre will be improved in the months to come.

“The masterplan offers an opportunity to develop creative, imaginative, new and relevant solutions that will influence the future of Kirkintilloch for generations to come.”

The masterplan also includes proposals to use the current Lairdsland Primary site for new housing when a new school is built next to Southbank Marina.

The council also plans to invest £1.55million to improve town centre access and parking.

The masterplan will be on show in the new council chambers at Southbank Marina and on a stall in Cowgate on Sunday, August 26, between 1pm and 5pm.

Members of the project team will be on hand to discuss the proposals and answer questions from the public.

Further consultation is due to take place with local residents in early autumn.
