The latest accident on March 24 saw a black saloon car heavily damaged after leaving the road a few hundred yards through the railway arches heading towards Kilsyth.

At least four such accidents have been witnessed this year, with none believed to be due to the weather conditions.

One concerned local man said: “I reckon this is the third car to come off the road at this exact same spot this year, another came off just up at the arches, so that’s four in total and nothing to do with snow and ice.

“I’d like to know why the council haven’t erected barriers at this accident hot spot as it seems only a matter of time before these speeding drivers kill themselves or someone else.”

Scott McCloy from Cumbernauld added: “Is this becoming the most dangerous road in Scotland?

“I saw three crashes on it in just ten days before the road was closed by police last weekend for what I presume was another one.”

North Lanarkshire Council roads officials will get together with their East Dunbartonshire counterparts to see what can be done.

A spokesperson said: “We will consider any improvements that could be made to signage and lining at this location.

“Part of this road is within East Dunbartonshire so our roads service will contact them to discuss.”
