However the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service says people still need to heed their safety warnings.

Paul Devlin, SFRS’ head of Prevention and Protection for North Lanarkshire, believes fire safety efforts in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth leave room for improvement.

He said: “To mark National Chip Week we are urging people to become more fire safety aware.

“Within North Lanarkshire in the past year there has been a total of 229 accidental house fire resulting in 94 people suffering fire related injuries.

“In the same period there have been 49 house fires and 10 casualties in Cumbernauld. In Kilsyth there were seven fires and four casualties.

“Almost 80% of these fires were as a result of cooking; most of these are small fires however left unattended they can quickly develop and put lives at risk.”

Paul wants all homes to have working smoke detectors and getting a free fire safety check. Contact your nearest station or call 0800 0731 999.
