Trusted traders only for council neighbours

East Renfrewshire is a frequent target for rogue traders, with @EastRenPolice tweeting this week: “We have had two reports of bogus workmen trying to obtain ‘additional payments’ from householders who have recently had work done by bonafide tradespeople. Both happened in the Clarkston area.”

The Trusted Trader scheme will be launched in East Ren on Tuesday (April 1), as trading standards officers set up stall at The Avenue between 10.30am and 3.30am.

The aim is to help residents choose a reliable trader by publishing an online directory of local, vetted businesses which have allowed previous customers to rate their work.

Senior trading standards officer Paul Holland said: “We will be launching the scheme with support from Police Scotland.

“There will be a number of give away materials to launch and promote the scheme. It is all designed to protect and empower our residents.

“Reputable home maintenance traders based in East Ren are also encouraged to investigate the benefits of joining the scheme.”

Councillor Vincent Waters, East Renfrewshire council’s convener for environment, added: “We hope this will help reduce the likelihood of people, particularly our older and vulnerable residents, becoming victims of crime in their home.”
