Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on Saturday (February 28) when a member of the public spotted the dog in a field in the Glespin area.

The male lurcher type, thought to be three years old, is now in the care of the charity’s Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Hamilton, where staff have named him Oliver.

Inspector Andrea Middleton said on Wednesday, “Two men had seen Oliver walking around the field looking very nervous.

“One of them offered him a piece of orange peel which was the only food they had and Oliver took it straight away, indicating how hungry he was.

“They managed to contain him before our animal rescue officer arrived to examine him.

“Oliver was clearly very skinny and in poor condition.

“He weighed only 15kg when a dog of his size should be at least 20kg.

“It’s possible he has been out on his own for some time.

“At this stage we don’t know if Oliver has simply strayed from home or if he has been abandoned and we’re appealing to anyone who recognises him to get in touch with us.”

Anyone with information about Oliver being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
