Upperward Mountaineering Club celebrates 40th anniversary

MEMBERS of Upperward Mountaineering Club turned out in force to celebrate 40 years of hillwalking by recreating the inaugural walk from Grey Mare’s Tail near Moffat, to the Crook Inn at Tweedsmuir.

The sun shone as more than 20 walkers, including original members, gathered at the Crook Inn, the final destination.

The path was steep as it made a rising traverse above the gorge but the Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall, celebrated in verse by Sir Walter Scott, more than made up for the hard work.

Several walkers left at the Megget Stone which may have been an ancient boundary marker, while others tackled the climb up to Broad Law in the hot sun, returning to the Crook Inn to waiting cars. The celebrations continued in the Woodpecker Inn in Lanark. It was a great day and one which will hopefully be repeated by new members who carry the club into its next 40 years!
