Urgent works order for Ardenlea House

AN ORDER to carry out urgent repair works on an eyesore blighting a historic conservation zone has now been served on its owners.

In September, the News reported that North Lanarkshire Council had approved an urgent works notice regarding derelict Ardenlea House. The former library was sold to private owners by the council a decade ago, but has been empty for years.

The decaying sandstone building was purchased by Robert MacKearnan. Pre-approved planning permission to convert it into a nursery was never followed up. Meanwhile, a nursery in Coatbridge owned by Mr McKeanan’s wife has abruptly closed.

The council’s Urgent Works Notice demands that the owners bring the building up to a minimum standard, and if they fail to do so the local authority has the right to carry out repairs itself and claim the costs from the owners.
