Vets club opens its doors to youngsters

Established for the junior family members of clients, the Club will offer a free programme of fun and educational events about pet care and health at its flagship Roundhouse Veterinary Hospital in Glasgow’s Southside.

Oliver Jackson, Pets’n’Vets Family partner, said: “The Junior Vets Club is an important way for us to give something back to our local community by helping to teach kids to become better pet owners at an early stage.

“While petting zoos can be appealing, our Junior Vets Club will take that idea further so that, rather than kids coming to play with rabbits and other furry animals, they’ll also learn about animal husbandry and how we deal with some medical problems.

“The intention is that the Junior Vets Club will lead into our long-established Pixie Programme, whereby kids from 14 years old help out in the veterinary practice on a regular basis – an increasingly important step into getting into vet school.

“I myself started here while at school before progressing to vet school and returning to The Pets’n’Vets Family for work experience.”

Jackson feels that the Junior Vets Club has the potential to link up with local schools by offering on-site tutorials on biology, anatomy and physiology, all of which fit well within the Curriculum for Excellence.
