VIDEO - Farmers choir puts pressure on supermarkets over milk prices

They filmed a parody of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s, Proud Mary in June that has already received more than 35,000 views on YouTube.

The choir’s version, called ‘Milk Must Have a Future’ was the brainchild of Kate Picken, a farmer’s wife and music teacher from Kirkcudbright.

She wrote the lyrics and hosted much of the filming on the family’s Milton Farm.

Kate told The Scottish Farmer about the motivation behind the song: “We thought it would be really nice to think of a song we could change the words to that would highlight the concerns of the dairy industry in a lighthearted way that young people, and people of all ages would like.

“It has been very well received and the views just keep climbing. We thought it would get a few hundred views but nowhere near the amount it has received.”

Farmers across the country have been protesting in supermarkets against the amount paid for their milk, just last week Ayrshire dairy farmers protested in Asda and Morrisons in Ayr and Kilmarnock by purchasing all the milk on sale and giving it away for free outside the stores just to make their point.

The video is being promoted on T-shirts carrying ‘#MilkMustHaveAFuture’, which are proving popular and receiving orders from around the world.

The choir was set up 2013 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs.
