Last year they received silver gilt recognition in the medium town category and a national biodiversity award, but there was no resting on their laurels.

Residents took part in three work parties ahead of the visit to ensure Bothwell was looking its best.

There was plenty for the judges to see including the sensory garden in Hamilton Road, the new wildflower area at the corner of Appledore Crescent, the craft bomb display at the library and a floral display celebrating Beautiful Scotland’s 50th birthday.

They also met children from St Bride’s and Bothwell Primaries as the sunflower scarecrows kept an eye on proceedings.
