Village Post Office is planned to move

Cumbernauld’s Village Post Office could be next to ‘move’ to a new location, in a plan claimed set to deliver “more modern”, open plan service.

If it goes ahead, the scheme will see Post Office services flitting from the Village Pharmacy premises at 34 Main Street to the Spar shop at 56 Main Street.

But while the distance isn’t great the main change would be the style of service , with traditional screened counter service replaced by an open plan layout.

The proposed transition follows on from the closure of the main branch Post Office in Cumbernauld town centre (which remains vacant) and its replacement by a unit inside a new WH Smith shop.

Now the Post Office is asking Village customers and others interested in the proposal to give their comments during a six-week consultation.

If the scheme is approved, the branch would open from 8am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday - which is said to provide a net increase of 26 hours per week over current opening hours.

The plan is part of what’s described as a major modernisation programme across the Post Office network.

This is said to be designed to make it easier for customers to do business, through longer opening hours and “modern open plan environments”.

Pharmacy manager James McMillan said: “People are certainly talking about this plan, and they are wondering exactly how the range of services might change.

“But while you read about Post Office branch closures this is a bit different, and while people are interested in exactly what it means I don’t think most will be too upset.”

It isn’t yet known how the space freed up in the Pharmacy premises would be used.

Post Office regional manager Suzanne Richardson said:“We are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

The consultation on the proposed plan closes on August 12.
