Volunteer Tamara wins award

Despite only volunteering with St Andrew’s First Aid since November of last year; Tamara has already given up countless hours of her free time to ensure members of the public are safe whilst out at events.

A 3rd year medical student at the University of Glasgow, Tamara is also one of the four St Andrew’s First Aid volunteers who are going to Western Kenya this summer to work with the charity First Aid Africa. The skills Tamara will teach local people are vital in communities where a hospital could be several days trek away and where ambulances are few and far between.

“I feel honoured to have won a Volunteer Hero Award. It’s not every day you get referred to as a hero! At the end of the day all I’m doing is trying to keep in good health and stop them from coming to any harm.

“But it’s not so much recognition for myself as a volunteer that makes this award so special but the recognition of the work that these charities do - both St Andrews First Aid and First Aid Africa. I am only one of many volunteers who dedicate their time to help others in need and who also work hard to pass their life saving first aid skills onto others,” says Tamara who lives in Kirkintilloch.

The East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action celebrates the achievements of volunteers in the area. The organisation held a celebratory lunch on 4 June at their offices in Kirkintilloch where Tamara was awarded with a certificate in recognition of her hard work.
