Volunteers needed for Commonwealth Games

The countdown to Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2014 is well and truly underway, and people in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth are being encouraged to volunteer.

MSP Jamie Hepburn is hoping people in the area will sign up as there are 15,000 volunteers required from all over Scotland to volunteer at the Games between July 23 and August 3.

People wishing to take part can register their interest online now and the application process will open mid-January.

Individuals wanting to get involved don’t have to have any previous experience volunteering and training will be provided for each volunteer role.

There will also be roles for those with more specific experience in the areas of sport or first aid, however, the vast majority of volunteer roles only require a friendly and enthusiastic attitude.

Mr Hepburn said: “This is a great opportunity for the people of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, and beyond, to get involved with the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

“I have no doubt that there will be many people throughout the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth area which will have the necessary welcoming and eager attitude to be real assets to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

“I would encourage all of those wanting to volunteer to register their interest as soon as possible, as I’m sure there will be many people wanting to take part in this experience.”
