The black and white female cat, who has been named Kia, was discovered by a member of the public at Muirhead Auto Parts, in Woodhead Road.

She was heard meowing – caged in the back of a car.

Animal Rescue officer, Joanna Boyle, said: “A man was walking round the scrap yard last Tuesday night when he heard meowing coming from inside a car.

“When he investigated he discovered Kia inside a bright pink pet carrier on the back seat.

“The man was really concerned for Kia so took her home with him before contacting us for help.

“It would seem that someone has deliberately gone into the scrap yard and put Kia inside the car.

“She was in a very vulnerable position as there’s a chance the car could have been crushed with her still inside.”

She added: “We’re really glad Kia is safe now and we’ll soon be looking to find her a loving new home.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone with information about Kia is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.

Kia is thought to be aged between two and three-years-old and is now being cared for at the Scottish SPCA’s Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre, in Hamilton.
