Bishopbriggs Community Council says the amount of litter on the corner of Auchinairn Road and Beech Road is “unbelievable”.

The group claims the litter is being dropped by youths who hang around outside a shop on the corner of the streets.

They now hope installing CCTV cameras will help catch those responsible.

A spokesperson for the community council said: “These youngsters don’t have any right to make the place a mess.

“I thought the police and council were trying to do something about litter louts, but the problem is ongoing.

“The litter around that area is unbelievable.

“We are requesting that cameras are put up there to stop the problem.”

Police told residents at a recent meeting of Bishopbriggs Community Council that they cannot charge people with dropping litter unless they are caught in the act.

A spokesperson for Kirkintilloch Police said: “Police are aware that there has been an issue raised by local residents about littering at local shops.

“This will not be tolerated and anyone caught littering will be issued with a fine or reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”

David Devine, head of roads and neighbourhood services at the council, said: “Whilst we have not received any particular complaints regarding litter at this junction, we are aware that on windy days blown litter accumulates there.

“In order to keep on top of the problem our town centre team litter-pick the area on a daily basis.

“In regard to CCTV, there are no plans for its installation at the corner of Auchinairn Road and Beech Road.”
