Weather puts bridge demolition on ice

The much-mooted demolition of the Tummel Way footbridge in Cumbernauld Town Centre will not take place this weekend due to weather.

The work was previously planned for the wee hours of Sunday, but was called off on Thursday, January 19 with winds forecast to exceed the 20 mile per hour safety threshold.

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council and Campsies Leisure said: “We are obviously disappointed that we were unable to remove the bridge as intended, but safety must come first.”

Once the long-disused footbridge is torn down, it will be replaced by a new bridge which will allow shoppers in Cumbernauld to walk a full circuit of the centre.

Work has also been carried out in Central Way to replace the central reservation barrier, and improvements are also planned for the bus stances.
