Weight and see on gym plan

AN APPLICATION for a gym in Shawlands Arcade has received overwhelming objections.

At the closure of the consultation, Pollokshields councillor David Meikle has called on developers to listen to the 667 people who voiced their opposition to the plans.

He said: “It is contrary to the city plan and town centre action plan. The community council, politicians, businesses and residents have objected to the gym. Glasgow city council and the applicant need to listen.”

The decision will now go to GCC’S planning applications committee for consideration.

The plan, if it goes ahead, would allow Pure Gym to turn part of the shopping centre into a 24 hour gymnasium.

At a meeting last month, Shawlands and Strathbungo community council discussed the gym plans with a massive turnout from the community, who unanimously rejected it.

Chair Tony Halifax said: “The objections show the depth of feeling against this proposal. Clearly people want something better for Shawlands.

“There is a view that the retailing aspect needs to be improved and the gym doesn’t do that. There are also concerns the gym would often be unmanned.”
