What a waste to go ... 13k tonnes of garden garbage recycled

GREEN-fingers residents in Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs have been praised after news that almost 13,000 tonnes of garden waste has been collected and recycled.

The council’s garden waste collection service, which runs from March to November each year, has seen an increase in the tonnage of material collected.

During 2011/12 a total of 9,622 tonnes of garden waste was collected from households and the council’s Mavis Valley Recycling Centre.

That is compared to 8,852 tonnes in 2010/11 – an increase of 770 tonnes.

When added to the tonnage of green waste collected from parks and from street sweepings, this brings the total amount of green waste collected and recycled by the council in 2011/12 to 12,934 tonnes compared to 11,854 tonnes in 2010/11 – an overall increase of 1,080 tonnes.

Convener of development and infrastructure, Councillor Alan Moir, is delighted at the increase.

He said: “Garden waste collection is an important element of our recycling figures. By offering this service to our residents we ensure that garden waste is diverted form landfill and is recycled appropriately. I’d like to thank local people for their co-operation and support.”

A food waste collection is being introduced next spring and, in January, the council will be collecting and recycling Christmas trees in the usual way,
