Where there’s a will, there’s a way

KIND-hearted residents of East Renfrewshire have risen to the occasion and responded to a local charity’s Christmas wish list.

East Renfrewshire Good Causes — a charity which funds good deeds for the area’s most in need — issued an appeal for special donations at this month.

Founder Russell MacMillan, from Newton Mearns, had drawn up a list of charitable deeds which hadn’t yet been achieved — asking for anyone with cash to spare to sponsor an item on the list.

Since then, lots of you have responded, with one charitable donor offering £300 to buy a laptop for a young carer who looks after a single, disabled parent.

Businesses and community groups have been digging deep too, with donations from Eastwoodmearns Taxis, Yoga for the Disabled, East Ren Carers Centre, Eastwood Rotary Club and The Avenue.

Russell founded ERGC in 2007 as a way of giving back after a life-saving double transplant. He told The Extra: “Thanks to Extra readers for responding so generously.

“ER Good Causes is based on my personal faith and the Christian principle of Love Your Neighbour — so it’s wonderful that at Christmas time, so many people have joined in to help the many good causes in a street near them.”

He added: “I would also like to thank the back bone of ERGC — the people who donate by regular standing order, where 100 per cent of their donations are spent directly on good causes”.
