Will Lanark Common Good Fund receive fair price for cemetery land?

A WRANGLE has broken out over what share the people of Lanark will get of the £9 million income South Lanarkshire Council is expected to earn from using their Common Good land for the town’s cemetery extension.

The council’s decision that it will decide itself what to pay the Common Good Fund – which it administers – for the use of land at Springbank Farm has already drawn fire.

But the council rejects calls for for an independent assessment on the grounds that it would not make “common sense”.

And it strongly insists that it will pay a fair price.

With space for 8000 lairs, Springbank will provide enough room to bury the current population of Lanark; with council charges for lairs recently increasing to £591 and burial charges going up to £553 each, the land will eventually generate income of over £9m for the council.
