William Smellie memorial in Lanark is neglected eyesore
DESPITE him being arguably the most famous Lanarkian in history, to whom every single person reading this owes a debt of gratitude and possibly even their life, his memorial now lies a neglected eyesore.
It is widely recognised that William Smellie was the father of modern midwifery, developing over 250 years ago medical equipment and delivery methods still in use in maternity wards around the world today.
He is a historically important figure whom any town would be proud to call a citizen and celebrate the memory of.
Except Lanark, it seems.
