Williamwood girls help the homeless

Williamwood High School’s senior pupils have secured a £3,000 boost to help homeless charity Glasgow City Mission.

S6 students Ruth Cosgrove, Rebecca Lupton and Lana Craig signed up to take part in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI), having identified the charity as making a big difference in their city.

Ruth explained: “We contacted Glasgow City Mission as we were aware of some of the work they did to help the city’s homeless.

“We went to see them and were really impressed.

“We then used the information gained on that visit to make a presentation in front of the school and YPI.”

The girls made it to the local final, then went on to win at national level — and Ruth added that they were delighted to win cash for “such an amazing charity”.

Shirley Gibson, depute head teacher of S6 and Williamwood’s charity committee, added: “The school has worked with Glasgow City Mission on a number of initiatives now and we’re delighted that through the hard work and dedication of these pupils, the charity will benefit from this significant sum of money.”

Graham Steven, marketing and fundraising manager at GCM, described the girls as “very passionate about our work and the need to help those in Glasgow who have fallen on hard times.

“We are thrilled to receive £3,000 which we will use to provide practical care and support in the form of food, advice and skills workshops to over 200 people each day.

“We wish to say a huge thank you to Ruth, Rebecca and Lana for their sterling efforts.”
