Williamwood takes coveted Games cup

The second annual schools event saw more than 300 high school pupils come together to compete in eight commonwealth sports — with overall sporting glory going to winner Williamwood High.

Barry Cook, senior Active Schools co-ordinator, explained: “Following a successful pilot in the run up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, this year’s School Games brought together over 300 young people from all over the area.

“The efforts shown by all involved were tremendous but particular congratulations to all the pupils from Williamwood High for being the overall winners.”

He added: “My thanks go to all the council’s Active Schools and sports development staff, school PE staff and club coaches from Giffnock Bowling Club, Giffnock Squash Club, Whitecraigs Rugby Club, AllStars Netball Club and Giffnock Hockey Club who assisted on the day.”

The sports day allowed youngsters to compete in football, rugby, swimming, table tennis, squash, lawn bowls, netball and hockey — and, according to councillor Mary Montague, to share “their love of sport and competition”.

The convener for community services and safety said: “This is a fantastic event bringing together young people from a host of schools.

“I would like to congratulate all pupils, including the winners.

“It’s vital we give our young residents every chance to take part in sport and healthy activities, putting them on the pathway to healthy, active lives.”

Following the success of last year’s event, the Games are expected to an annual challenge — so East Ren schools may have their eyes on taking away Williamwood’s prize in 2016.
