Woman fights off mugger

A BRAVE woman fought off a mugger in Cumbernauld in a week where women have been targeted for their handbags in the town.

The 61-year-old, who did not want to be identified, was on her way home from work at around 6.45pm on Friday, February 8, when she was attacked.

She explained: “I got off the bus and it was raining so I put my umbrella up and I had my bag on my shoulder.

“Someone came up behind me and grabbed my bag.

“As I was holding my umbrella, when he grabbed the bag it whipped round to my front.

“Unfortunately the young man started punching me in an attempt to get the bag and I just kept shouting ‘you are not keeping it’.”

A struggle ensued between the two but a car driving along the road seemed to frighten the crook off and he made his way along Westfield Road.
