Woman from Lenzie jailed for drug smuggling

A Lenzie woman has been jailed for six years and eight months after being caught trying to smuggle cocaine out of Peru.

Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum, of Dungannon, County Tyrone, both 20, admitted trying to smuggle cocaine worth £1.5m.

They were jailed for eight years each, but the sentences were reduced because of their guilty pleas.

The woman have insisted they were coerced and threatened into carrying the drugs in their cases.

They decided to plead guilty in the hope they would be given a shorter sentences.

It’s not known if they will be able to serve part of their sentence in the UK.

Melissa’s aunt Bernadette Gormal set up a Facebook site earlier this year to allow people to voice their support - and 3,545 people have ‘liked’ it.

Melissa, a former Lenzie Academy pupil, spent her 20th birthday on August 16 in detention.
