Women's Day event was a '˜great success'

Empowered celebrated the special day by running a free public event at Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre.

Over 60 people, including pupils from Bearsden Academy, Boclair Academy,Kirkintilloch High School, Merkland School, St Ninian’s High School and Turnbull High School, filled out the conference room in the morning where presentations explored Scottish women’s histories from national and local perspectives.

These were provided by guest speakers from Glasgow’s Women’s Library and the East Dunbartonshire Trails and Tales Heritage programme.

A special screening of the Glasgow’s Women’s Library’s short documentary film ‘March’ also took place.

The event then moved into the leisure centre foyer where guests and a large number of interested leisure centre users sampled taster arts activities, complimentary hair styling, make-up, henna, saree tying, massage therapies and fruit smoothies.

Local services were also on hand to provide information and advice on a range of topics including health improvement.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “The day was a great success and it was particularly pleasing to see some young faces in the audience, including pupils from schools across East Dunbartonshire, as the aim of the event was to help inspire women as well as promoting positive change in our communities.

“All of the participants seemed to enjoy the event and I would like to thank all our partners for making the day such a success.”
