Womwen over 50 hit in pensions change

WOMEN in this constituency stand to lose up to £11,000 in pensions due to a proposed rise in pension age.

That warning comes from MP Gregg McClymont, who predicts the proposed Pensions Bill will be especially damaging for women in their 50s as they miss out on pensions and other benefits such as winter fuel allowance. He claims that 1000 women in Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East will be affected.

Mr McClymont, who was recently appointed Shadow Pensions Minister, made this prediction in the Commons at the third reading of the Pensions Bill.

The Government position in the debate is that the country cannot afford to maintain the current situation regarding pensions and benefits, and is seeking to make billions in savings. With continuing rapid growth in life expectancy, the pensions system is overburdened as it was never designed to support so many for so long.

Gregg said: “In Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East alone, 1100 women will lose out at a cost to each of up to £11,000 in lost state pension and associated benefits.
