Thanks to sponsorship from Brightwork, the whizz-kids had the opportunity to compete in the Jaguar Land Rover 4 X 4 challenge for the fourth year in a row.

The six-strong team from Woodfarm High School in Clarkston came first in the regional finals, securing their place in the national championships.

The challenge was for the team to design and construct a remote control 4-wheel drive car to set specifications and negotiate a test track designed by Land Rover’s experts.

In addition to the test track, the team – consisting of Danial, Rory, Suzanne, Rowan, Jake and Lewis - had to give a presentation and submit their car to an engineering and pit lane inspection.

The team won not only the Best Overall award; but the Best Driving Award and the Best Engineering Award; a first for the school.

Dr Simon Hadfield, principal teacher of Science at Woodfarm, said: “The children are very enthusiastic learners about engineering processes.

“This year, we managed to incorporate 3D printing, laser cutting, and vacuum forming; so every part of the challenge teaches in-depth engineering and design skills.”

The team travel to Silverstone on March 28 for the UK National Championship.
