Worker badly hurt at roadworks

A teenage construction worker has been critically injured at motorway roadworks in Bellshill.

Accident happened near Shawhead interchange where major improvements are being carried out.

The 18-year-old man is believed to have been struck by a vehicle near Carnbroe Road around 11am yesterday.

He is being treated for serious injuries in the intensive care unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland described the worker’s condition as “critical but stable”.

He added: “The incident is being treated as an industrial accident and as such a full investigation will be undertaken by Health and Safety Executive.”

Major works to upgrade the M8 and the Shawhead interchange have been taking place in the area. A new bridge linking North Road, Bellshill, with Shawhead is due to open at the end of this month.
